This course is aimed at beginners who want to try out various painting mediums and techniques and improvers who are looking to refresh or develop their painting skills. Using the versatility of water based gouache paints we will look at watercolour and basic oil painting techniques. This will include capturing texture, light and dark (contrast), colour mixing, composition, etc. Oil pastels, soft pastels and soft graphite pencils will be covered (acrylic paints could also be included if students wanted). A variety of subjects will be covered. The course will be structured around demonstrations, set work and students’ own projects.

These will include demonstrations by tutor; individual practice by student; instruction on a group and individual basis; question and answer, etc.


For the first session please bring good quality gouache paints: Winsor and Newton introductory set or buy them separately; Primary yellow (or Lemon yellow), Permanent yellow deep, Primary blue (or Prussian blue), Ultramarine, Spectrum red, Primary red (or Alizarin Crimson), Permanent white (or Zinc white) & Ivory black. From these 8 colours you should be able to mix most colours. Good quality ‘Bockingford’ watercolour paper (size A4 140lb (300gsm), ‘NOT’ (or cold pressed) surface), a variety of soft nylon watercolour brushes, well palette, 2 large pots for water, pencil (HB), note book, newspaper or plastic table cloth to protect table, apron or similar to protect clothes.

Parking is available at the centre. The room will be on the first floor but there is a lift making it accessible for wheelchairs, and disabled accessible toilet. Tea and coffee provided at a small charge.
