This course is aimed at beginners and improvers who want to refresh and develop their drawing and painting skills. Being able to draw the subject, capturing its form, texture, etc. before painting it can lead to a more successful piece of work. It will benefit students who want to learn the basic elements of drawing and painting so that they can become more confident and successful at it. A variety of techniques and subjects will be covered.


Beginners & those with a little experience who have the enthusiasm and passion for creating art.

These will include demonstrations by tutor; individual practice by student; instruction on a group and individual basis; question and answer, etc.


First session: Please bring a range of pencils from HB to 8B, sketchbook (A3), rubber, sharpener & ruler. Future sessions: Drawing equipment: Charcoal (compressed and willow). Ink nibs/holder. Putty rubber. Black ink. Painting equipment: Students’ quality watercolour paints (e.g. Winsor & Newton ‘Cotman Student Watercolour’). Good quality ‘Bockingford’ watercolour paper (size A4 140lb (300gsm), ‘NOT’ (or cold pressed) surface), a variety of soft watercolour brushes, 2 large pots for water, drawing board to attach paper, masking tape, pencil (HB), sketch pad, newspaper or plastic table cloth to protect table, apron or similar to protect clothes.

Limited car parking at the centre plus on street parking. It is on the ground floor and accessible for wheelchairs, with disabled accessible toilet.
